Since The Players where Mickelson and Woods played together the conversation has been growing around the two titans of the sport coming together to play a high stakes match rumoured to be worth as much as $10 million.
Mickelson really started the conversation when he suggested they skip the tournament arena and make it a man on man battle.
“The excitement that’s been going on around here, it gets me thinking: Why don’t we just bypass all the ancillary stuff of a tournament and just go head-to-head and just have some kind of a high-stakes, winner-take-all match? Now, I don’t know if he wants a piece of me, but I just think it would be something that would be really fun for us to do, and I think there would be a lot of interest in it if we just went straight to the final round.”
The famous duo have committed to even wearing microphones whilst battling it out. The vision held by those behind the match is this would be the first of many exhibition matches between the two which would be televised to fans.
Could this be the beginning of a new format of golf viewing? which sees fans no longer relying on their favourites players to make the cut rather have rivals placed head to head in an 18 hole dual.
No date has been set as yet and many believed the match was going ahead on the 3rd of July in Las Vegas and whilst this date proved false the match is both very much part of both players upcoming schedules.
