Tony Romo has claimed the $125,000 winner’s cheque at the American Century Championship, a celebrity tournament which raises money for charity. Of course being an amateur Romo is unable to receive the cash rather it is donated to charities of his choosing.
The former Dallas Cowboy finished the event 3 points clear of second place totalling 71 points. The event uses a modified stableford format where eagles receive 6 points, birdies 3, pars 1 and double-bogey or greater -2.
Claiming the championship was especially impressive as Romo had to hold off a late charge from Mark Mulder three time defending champion. Mulder actually had an eagle putt on the last hole of the tournament to tie Romo but missed having to settle for a runner up finish.
When asked about the win Romo had this to say, ”It’s a special win,” having finished second 3 times during his 7 year stint at the annual celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course. ”It feels like you’re playing a tournament back home here. The day felt good for a lot of reason”
Romo now turns his attention to a 36-hole U.S. Amateur qualifying tournament on Monday which he is competing in alongside hundreds of other hopefuls.
