Round 1 at The Players

The last time Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods were paired together at The Players was in 2001, where Tiger produced the iconic “better than most” putt in the third round. The opening round this year at The Players also marked Phil and Tiger’s first game together in four years, and as most golfer’s were hoping for, it would be a pairing to remember. Rickie Fowler was the third player in the group for the first round, but unfortunately for golfing fans, the grouping didn’t produce the scores we hoped to see. Mickelson had a miserable day, shooting 79 on a day where scoring was low on average for the field, in fact only 2 other players managed worse for the day. Fowler shot a steady 74, whilst Tiger had the best score in the group at even-par 72.

Tiger did however produce some magic at the turn on 9, making a stunning eagle.

However, much more work is needed to chase down the leaders after round 1, with 6 players all at 6-under par for the round. Webb Simpson, World number one Dustin Johnson, Alex Noren, Chesson Hadley, Matt Kuchar and Patrick Cantlay all shot 66 to take shared lead. 24 balls were recorded in the water during this year’s opening round at Sawgrass, expect a few more as the weekend nerves start to wreak havoc!

No. 17 doesn’t play favorites. 💦💦
