Finishing tied 20th this week turned out to be just the icing on the cake for Thorbjorn Olesen as he held on to the 8th automatic qualifier spot on the European Team for the upcoming Ryder Cup after both Eddie Pepperell and Matthew Fitzpatrick failed to finish high enough to force their way in. The pair finishing tied 56th and tied 7th respectively.
Cannot put into words how happy I am right now! It’s always been my dream to be a Ryder Cup Player, but it’s going to be even more special with my great friend @ThomasBjornGolf as captain! Bring it on 🇪🇺🇩🇰 pic.twitter.com/p8L3Pxz6ql

Olesen will become just the third Dane to play in a Ryder Cup following in the footsteps of Bjorn and Soren Hansen, joining the other 7 automatic qualifiers in the European Team, Francesco Molinari, Justin Rose, Tyrrell Hatton and Tommy Fleetwood via European Points and Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm and Alex Noren via World Points.
Bjorn is now left with the difficult decision of filling the final 4 spots on his team roster with some popular options being Ian Poulter, Paul Casey, Henrik Stenson, Sergio Garcia, Rafael Cabrera-Bello and Thomas Pieters. Bjorn will make his difficult decision this coming Wednesday.
Captain Furyk on the other hand has a far more simple equation in front of him with many believing 3 of the 4 spots available are all but confirmed to be filled by Mickelson, Woods and DeChambeau leaving just one decision to be made.
The Ryder cup will be played between the 28th and 30th of September at Le Golf National just outside Paris.
